Tim Sweeney says Epic Games Store is open to devs using generative AI

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has suggested titles that feature generative AI will be allowed on the Epic Games Store.

Responding to an X user who accused Valve of implementing an "idiotic" anti-AI policy on Steam after the company apparently removed a project from its storefront when its developer released an optional ChatGPT mod for playtesters, Sweeney suggested they bring the title to the Epic Games Store because it doesn't "ban games for using new technologies." Come from top646casino

Earlier this year, Valve told Game Developer the "legal uncertainty" regarding how some generative AI models have been trained is why it's being careful about approving titles that use the technology, and said it's up to developers to show they have the "appropriate rights to ship their game."

"We know it is a constantly evolving tech, and our goal is not to discourage the use of it on Steam," added Valve, reiterating that it still intends to "ship as many of the title we receive as we can."

The issue, for Valve, is that AI models like ChatGPT have been trained using a huge amount of data pulled from the internet, meaning the outputs they produce rely heavily on the work of others. Valve believes this could create legal issues further down the line. 

"We shouldn't assume all generative AI is terrible or infringing"

Sweeney, however, said that while the copyright concerns around AI-generated assets make sense, titles that contain "a lot of human-made content plus some AI content can be protected as a whole, even if some specific assets alone aren't protected."

"The idea that art made from generative AI whose billion-image training set included a particular piece of source art is a derivative work of that source art is a massive leap beyond existing legal precedent. No court has issued any sort of ruling of that sort," continued Sweeney.

"And if it were the case, it’s hard to see how it wouldn’t lead by similar reasoning to the conclusion that every work done by a human artist is a derivative work of everything that artist has ever seen, by virtue of it contributing to the wiring of the neurons in their brain."

Sweeney said that while it's absolutely possible to abuse generative AI by overtraining or conditioning it to intentionally reproduce something that's "substantially similar" to a specific work, effectively turning it into a "copying mechanism," that usually doesn't happen.

He also said that Epic doesn't train generative AI on any customer content on its services or marketplace. "These are just my thoughts on why we shouldn’t assume all generative AI is terrible or infringing," he added.

On that point, Sweeney has previously stated that AI companies shouldn't be "scraping the web" to find and repurpose the work of creators.

During a chat with PC Gamer earlier this year, Sweeney discussed how the rise of generative AI systems might impact creators on ArtStation, the portfolio website owned by Epic, and said companies that are looking to turn AI tools into commercial products shouldn't be "hoovering up everybody's art data."

Update- Keywords and Ubisoft amending Skull & Bones credits after omitting translators

Update (03/07/24): Keywords is working with Ubisoft to amend the Skull & Bones credits after omitting the names of some translators.

In a statement sent to Game Developer, a Keywords spokesperson thanked us for highlighting the issue but didn't explain how it managed to miss the names in the first place.

"Thank you for highlighting this, after further verification, the team working on the game had evolved from those on the list initially provided to Ubisoft," they said. "We have provided an updated list of contributors to Ubisoft, and they are already working on incorporating these changes into the in-game credits via a future update."

It's unclear when that update will land or how many names are being added. One Skull & Bones translator impacted by this instance of miscrediting said that neither Keywords nor Ubisoft have been in touch since we published our article, but explained the company could be using its own internal records to acquire the names of those omitted. Come from Soccer 13 pools and matches

Original story (02/27/24): Ubisoft and Keywords have failed to credit a number of external translators who worked on Skull & Bones.

Multiple localization workers speaking to Game Developer have shown they worked on the project for Keywords as contract staff, but have yet to be credited for their contributions.

One anonymous source worked on multiple projects for Keywords over many years. Although they've been credited for previous translations done under the Keywords banner, they have yet to be credited for their work on Skull & Bones despite spending years working on that specific project.

"Neither Keywords nor Ubisoft has contacted me regarding adding my name to the credits," they said. "It definitely feels unrewarding and demotivating not having my name in the credits, since it's mostly passion that keeps us grinding in this line of work."

They also indicated that some other translators were omitted from the credits. That allegation was corroborated by George Ou, a freelance translator who previously worked for Keywords as a contractor but has since parted ways with the company.

Ou told Game Developer he worked on the Simplified Chinese version of Skull & Bones for Keywords but, like others, has not been credited. Documents shown to Game Developer indicate Ou made significant contributions to the project, but that his work hasn't been acknowledged.

Notably, Ou claims Keywords is preventing freelance translators who haven't been credited from publicly disclosing, discussing, or promoting their involvement in some productions by attempting to weaponize NDAs even after a project has launched.

"According to the then NDA I signed with Keywords, I need to have their authorization to publicly list these games in my portfolio," said Ou.

"Emails were sent back and forth. A friendly request received nothing but 50-day radio silence, which soon turned into a tense dispute, and eventually ended up in a situation where their legal team sent me a cease and desist letter and I hired a solicitor to counter who told me my understanding on NDA termination was correct—I can proactively end my cooperation with Keywords Studio with written materials and the NDA remains in effect for one year."

"One year later, I can safely list any titles I worked with Keywords on my website," he continued. "What Keywords and other large localization service providers (LSPs) are doing actually constitutes a fact that freelance translators can't be credited or prove their work experience. The indifferent attitude of LSPs is partly because of their own self-interest, but it's also passively incited by large publishers like Ubisoft."

Another freelance translator who wishes to remain anonymous corroborated those reports, and explained that while they have been credited for some of their work at Keywords, they don't feature in the Skull & Bones roll call.

They claimed to have worked on Skull & Bones for months, but said the project manager tasked with wrangling translators didn't ask for their name. Despite that omission, they seemed more ambivalent about the miscrediting issue. "I focus more on getting things done and get paid," they said. "Showing people that I did something isn't my top priority."

Keywords cannot guarantee all workers will be credited

When contacted by Game Developer, Keywords said it was "impossible" to comment on individual allegations and stated that game developers and publishers will ultimately make the final call where crediting is concerned.

"As a services provider to the global video games industry, our standard procedure is to provide the names of all who worked on the game with the understanding that this is no guarantee of inclusion in the final game credits, as crediting decisions remain with game developers and publishers. This may not always happen, due to specific circumstance, but in those cases, we subsequently engage with our clients and ensure they have a complete list of content creators," said a spokesperson.

After being pressed on claims it uses NDAs to silence contract staff, Keywords said NDAs or confidentiality clauses are a "common requirement" for localization workers. It added those contracts are used to "safeguard client confidentially" and protect information such as release dates and key details from leaking into the public domain.

"Keywords does not restrict workers from mentioning that they have worked for Keywords, but it is up to Keywords' clients to determine how the workers game contributions are treated, as the clients own the IP (some will have no issue with workers noting their contributions publicly, others might choose for this to remain confidential) It's our standard practice to acknowledge all contributors, but inclusion in final game credits isn't guaranteed, as that decision rests with the client," it added.

When asked to clarify whether it uses NDAs that prevent freelancers from discussing their work in perpetuity, Keywords said that "NDAs do not restrict contributors from mentioning who they have worked for, but it is up to the client to determine how their game contributions are treated."

Game Developer reached out to Ubisoft multiple times for comment, but only heard back from the company late last week. A Ubisoft spokesperson claimed the publisher would look into the matter but has yet to provide a meaningful update.

Criminal Girls: Invite Only is a perverted, uncomfortable crack at a role-playing game. You find the trappings of a standard turn-based adventure here, from the incessant random battles to the monumental bosses with seemingly endless hit points. The multi-floored dungeons and rich progression system can last you dozens of hours, but with whipping the sinful desires of young girls acting as one of the core hooks, it’s difficult to take Criminal Girls seriously. What could have been a basic, if uninspired, JRPG is ultimately little more than a sleazy grab at an audience pining to watch bloated bosoms bounce at the touch of the Vita’s front and back screens. The overall package isn’t wholly without merit, but Criminal Girls is far too focused on satiating raw desire in lieu of promoting its few interesting features.

The peculiar narrative does little to contextualize the near-nudity and hyper-sexualized moments. You find yourself deep in the bowels of Hell as the game opens, greeted by an officious warden who tasks you with taking care of a medley of sinful souls. These female delinquents have been damned to a life in Hades, but if they can pass the Redemption Program and overcome the challenges ahead, their sins will be forgiven. Of course, each of the seven unique characters has been banished and disregarded for a reason, so it takes time to gain their trust and convince them to actually earn the right to be redeemed.

Relationships among the girls are built and then tested as you climb out of Hell, but one of the keys to unlocking special skills and stat boosts is through individual motivation. After gaining the universal currency through battles and treasure chests, you can choose the Motivate option at any save point to whip, drip liquids on, or tickle any of the delinquents. During these sequences–which become more involved as your character progresses–your girl of choice either sheepishly or aggressively questions your intentions as she dons an outfit that ranges from risqué to borderline pornographic. If you want your party to reach its full potential, your participation in these shameless sequences is necessary.

And surprisingly, these scenes were even more explicit in Japan. This is a touched-up edition of a PSP game released in 2010, with the motivation scenes being edited so that pink steam obfuscates portions of the screen before eventually dissipating at your touch. Moans and groans have also been removed, but somehow, the silence is even more unsettling.

The whole process is vulgar and unnecessary. The basic dialogue that litters your journey can be crude, drawing attention to one of the character’s breasts or bottom. But going from cheap sexual jokes to rubbing a stripped-down teenager on your Vita screen is a thematic leap that’s not only jarring but repellent. The story isn’t stellar by any means, but any emotional connection you build with these characters from dungeon to dungeon is immediately snapped once you throw them into such compromising positions.

It’d be easy just to disregard Criminal Girls: Invite Only if the surrounding elements were just as tasteless. However, the actual video game part, where you battle monsters and raise levels, is fun, and pretty novelbesides. Instead of controlling the action of all four party members in a given turn, you pick just one of four options. One girl might feel bold and want to do a solo attack, while another decides that an elemental ability is the best course of action. As your characters grow closer and learn new abilities, new provisional avenues appear. By the end, it’s common to see all four girls working together to dole out damage as a team or maybe even combine for a special duo ability dealing triple damage.

The turn-based action might be fun, but every other element of Criminal Girls: Invite Only does its best to stamp out its only saving grace. When it’s not pushing discomforting images of barely dressed teens in your face, Criminal Girls is leading you back and forth across a lifeless dungeon just so you can thumb through lines of dull dialogue. There’s enjoyment to be found within the game’s combat, but it’s just not worth stomaching the tedious design and perverse activities to find the pearl inside.
